Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen - Led by Denise Stankovics
Jacob Jankowski, now an old man, remembers the 1930s when he was a veterinary student forced to leave school because of a family tragedy shortly before he was to graduate. Having nowhere to go, he hopped on what turned out to be a circus train and took a job as a caretaker for the animals. He and Marlena, a beautiful circus performer, shared compassion for an elephant named Rosie. They fell in love but Marlena’s cruel husband stood in their way. One reviewer wrote, “Beautifully written, Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place.”
